Why Should You Change Your Locks?

Keeping your home safe should always remain your biggest priority. The simplest form of home security is a door lock that restricts unauthorized access to outsiders.

When it comes to limiting access, you should concentrate on the key entrance points, such as the front and back doors, and ensure that they are well secured with high-quality locks.

These locks protect your home from unauthorized entry, and anyone with access to them has access to your home. Someone who has access to your key for one type of lock (such as an exterior door) could potentially use it to access your home and unlock other doors.

The easiest way to prevent this is by changing all of your locks at once.

It is possible that previous homeowners or tenants had spare keys and even shared them with their friends and families. Since you may not know how many people have access to the extra keys, it is prudent to change the locks.

There are several circumstances when you might want to change your locks

  • You have recently moved into a new property
  • You have changed tenants in a rental unit, and you do not wish past tenants to use their existing keys on the door lock.
  • After a house renovation, the construction workers had keys to access the property.
  • You think someone may have copied your key.
  • Burglars broke into your home or business premises and stole your valuables.
  • You have lost your keys.
  • Your locks are old, worn out, and outdated.
  • You want to maximise the security level of your home.

Rekeying Vs Changing Locks

If your lock is cracked, broken into, or in bad shape, then changing it out may be a good option. However, if the reason for replacing your locks isn’t related to damage, you may want to rethink this and consider rekeying instead.

There are two main methods for changing the locks on a door: rekeying and changing.

Changing the locks means installing new hardware and removing the old.

Rekeying involves adjusting the pins inside an existing cylinder to line up with different tumblers (or pins) on your keys without removing any hardware. It’s a less expensive option than changing all your locks.

A lock change may be more suitable and preferred over certain circumstances than others. Let’s go over some differences between the two options for a more straightforward clarification.

Rekeying vs Changing Locks: The Basic Differences

Rekeying Locks

  1. New Set of Keys. When a locksmith rekeys a lock, we’ll adjust the pins inside an existing cylinder.  Every series of key pins in your lock correspond to specific key pins, so when you replace those pins with different ones, you essentially get a new key that will now operate the lock.
  2. Old keys don’t work. Hereafter, you can only access your home only if you have the new keys. The old keys go in through the lock but will not open your door no matter what since the pins have shifted.
  3. Fast & easy process. Rekeying takes a little bit less time since the lock hardware remains in place.
  4. Cost Efficient. Rekeying is much less expensive than changing locks because you are not replacing the lock body.
  5. Applicable across most locks. Most locks can be rekeyed, including residential and commercial locks. However, if you have old locks that are worn out or want to increase your facility’s security, it is advisable to get a new lock.

Changing Locks Near Me

  1. A new lockset. Changing locks involves replacing the entire cylinder, essentially changing the lock. In most cases, this includes replacing both doorknobs and deadbolts with brand-new ones — although it depends on how much work needs to be done on each piece of hardware installed.
  2. Ability to change your security. Changing locks means installing new hardware and removing all traces of the old lock from your door frame. It means you could upgrade your locks and security.
  3. A new set of keys. You will also get new keys to replace your current ones when you get a new lock.
  4. Extra Time is taken. A complete lock replacement usually takes longer since we need to remove the old locks and install new ones.
  5. Extra Costs. Changing locks will involve paying extra for labour and buying a new replacement lock.

How to change your locks

A locksmith can do a lock change, or you could do it yourself (DIY). You will need a little guidance on the steps to follow, but they are easy and simple steps.

The first step is to remove the old lock. Slide a screwdriver under the top edge of the door and pry up gently until the lock pops out.

Once you have removed the old lock, you need to install your new one in its place.

Simply line up your new lock with the hole on your door, push it into place, and then use the screws provided with your new lock to secure it in place. That’s all there is to it!

Tools you’ll need to change locks.

Before starting this project, check out to see if you have the necessary tools you’ll need. Here’s what you want to have in hand.

  • New locks. Purchase new locks for each door that you want to change.
  • Screwdriver. If you have a drill, you could use it to push screws for some doors.
  • Measuring tape. Calculate the distance from the door edge to the centre of the lock.
  • Hammer and Chisel. Optional
  • Pliers. Optional

Once you have the required tools, we can go ahead and start changing your door locks.

We discuss how to change a mortice lock below and show step-by-step procedures of what you should follow if you decide to change the lock yourself.

How to change a mortice lock

There are two types of mortice locks; the Mortice sash lock and the mortice deadlock. A sash lock is often used on back doors and has a latch on the bolt. A mortice deadlock only has a bolt and is typically used on the front door in conjunction with a night latch. However, they are both fitted in the same way.

Selecting the replacement lock

First, measure the back sets of your existing lock while measuring from the front edge of the door to the centre of the keyhole. If the measurement is 45mm, you’ll need a 65 mm mortice lock. If the measurement is 57mm, then you’ll need a 75mm lock.

If you are replacing a sash lock, you’ll need to measure the centre-to-centre distance between the keyhole and the door handle spin hole. Also, make a note of the faceplate height.

A mortice lock will typically have 2,3, or 5 lever mechanisms—the more levers, the better the level of security.

Changing the lock

There are only a few of the screws to take out. Remove the screws from the lock faceplate on the edge of the door. In most cases, the faceplate is a loose component and will come away readily.

If you are replacing a sash lock, you will also have to remove the door handle and the spindle that connects the handles.

Next, remove the lock. Make sure the bolt is out, and then use a pair of pliers to grip the bolt and pull the lock from the door.

Compare the size and shape of the old lock with the replacement. If both match, push the new lock into the mortice lock into the door. Position the faceplate and then fix the lock. If necessary, use a hammer and more chisel to adjust the faceplate cut out before you set the lock.

If you are replacing a sash lock, you can refit the door handles at this stage. If you are replacing a deadlock, You have the choice of whether or not to replace the existing excursions.

Next, remove the existing keep from the door frame. Close the door against the frame and mark out the position of the bolt on the door frame. Offer up the new keep and see if it will fit into the existing cut-out into the frame. If necessary, use the hammer and chisel again to adjust the cut-out.

Push the keep into the frame and fix it using the screws provided.

Check the operation of the lock with the door open, then close the door and test it again.

Who can help you change a lock?

The first step to changing the locks is to call a locksmith. A professional locksmith understands what is involved in lock change and wants to support the security level of your home.

First, determine where you want the lock changed. Is it the front or back door? It is also essential that you have an idea of what type of lock you want to be installed. The locksmith can help with this decision, but it is okay to ask for our opinion on what would be best for your home or business if you are unsure.

You may be tempted to do it yourself, but you might not get it right and spoil your locks. You may also be thinking about saving the costs of changing a lock, but you might put yourself in danger. We highly advise using a reputable company such as UK Newcastle Locksmith Services.

How often should you change your locks?

Most locksmiths recommend that you change your locks every seven years.

However, changing them is based on a variety of factors. If a lock is only used once in a while, it may last longer. For other homeowners, they may wish to have their locks changed before the seven-year term is up.

The following are some factors you may consider before changing your locks.

  • The age of your existing locks.

If you cannot remember the last time you changed your locks, probably more than seven years ago, it is wise to change them. If you moved to a new house, you are not likely to know when the locks were placed there or if a previous owner had many spare keys. It is best to change the locks than to rule out any potential problems.

  • The condition of the locks, whether damaged or well-performing.

Locks that are old and loose will most likely decrease the security level of your home. A damaged lock resulting from a break-in can also compromise your home, and you should change them immediately.

  • The availability of the keys

Keys get lost often, and if you cannot find them again, it is prudent to have a new lock with new keys. However, make sure to search for them carefully without any hurry as sometimes you may just have misplaced them and find them the next day.

  • Any other changes to your home

If you had numerous people coming in and out of your home before, but now things are different, you may decide to change the locks. For example, If you replace a cleaning crew coming to your home for several months, then it is time for another lock.

How to choose the best locks for your house

If you want to keep your home secure, you’ll need to make sure that the locks on your doors are strong.

Lock and key technology have come a long way over the years, with new developments made all the time. Today, there are many different types of locks available on the market, and each one has its advantages and disadvantages.

The different kinds of door locks provide varying levels of safety and security.

The most popular varieties are padlocks, deadbolts, knob locks, lever handle locks, rim or mortice locks, euro profile cylinders, cam locks, multi-point locks, and smart locks.

The type of lock you choose will depend on several factors:

  • How much money do you have to spend on locks?

If you have a limited budget, it may not be possible to install expensive high-security locks on every door in your house. In this case, it would be better to install good quality standard security locks on all doors and windows instead of installing high-quality deadlocks or padlocks where they aren’t necessary.

  • How valuable your possessions are and how much risk there is

Consider if your possessions will be stolen or damaged if they aren’t locked away securely.

Suppose your house contains valuable items such as artwork or jewellery. In that case, it may be worth paying extra for higher-quality locks that can resist drilling or picking attacks more effectively than standard locks.

What are the cost factors of getting your locks changed?

A number of factors can influence the cost of a lock change and the length of time it takes to accomplish it.

The following is a general breakdown of the various cost factors associated with changing your locks.

  • Emergency Assistance

Emergency call-out fees can significantly increase the cost of changing your locks.

If you’re ever locked out of your house and need a house locksmith or your lock breaks, and you’re stuck, you’ll need to contact an emergency locksmith.

If you call after working hours and on the weekends, the call-out fees significantly increase.

  • Lock materials

The type of materials used for the lock greatly determines the cost of the lock. A budget lock cylinder can range from about £50. However, higher quality and more secure lock cylinders are more expensive. A higher-quality lock will last longer and serve you better in the long run.

  • The number of locks that need replacing

If you decide that you want several door locks replaced, then the total costs increase with an increase in each job. Also, consider if the locks are damaged or broken and may need extra time to replace them.
